The long-awaited Apple iPhone soon gave way to people waiting for a newer version. The Apple iPhone G3 is that version. In comparison to the original Apple iPhone, users will find that the changes are more enhancements than overhauls. For example, the original iPhone was considered to be slow in regards to data when compared to other devices in the same price range.

Apple took the critiquing of their iPhone in and the short timeframe of a year came back with a device sure to please and at a cost of much less than that of the original phone. The upgrades that Apple added to the iPhone are also available to current iPhone users with the iPhone software update available at the iTunes App Store.

For users wanting both the new software upgrades and the new hardware upgrades they will have to purchase the new iPhone G3. Although selling your original iPhone could prove a little difficult with the new one costing less.

So What Is New?

The phone itself didn’t go through extensive changes. The metal on the back has been replaced with a more radio-friendly plastic which has contours instead of being flat edged; this fits the shape of your hand better. The recessed headphone jack was replaced with a standard headphone jack and the colors appear a little warmer to the eye. You almost can’t tell the original from the G3 unless you are very familiar with them both.On to the real enhancements:

  • 3G – The original iPhone used EDGE networking for connectivity and was very slow. The new G3 uses the HSDPA protocol on the UTMS networks – most users just call it 3G. Speeds are quoted as being twice as fast as the original phone but some tests have clocked speeds up to four times as fast.
  • The 3G network also supports voice and data at the same time. Simply put, you can be receiving email while you are talking on the telephone. One doesn’t interfere with the other.
  • The new G3 employs GPS hardware, not simulated GPS using triangulation of cell towers. This allows for quicker location of satellites, better performance and less power usage.
  • In addition to the file attachments already supported, the G3 now supports Power Point and iWork attachments.
  • Mobile Me – real time synchronization of email, address book, calendar and data between the iPhone and the computer.
  • Enterprise Support – Geared toward businesses, the iPhone now supports Microsoft Exchange servers allowing live updates of office information.

IPhone users will be more than thrilled with the additions included in the new Apple iPhone 3g. At half the cost with more features and more available storage, the only question now is what to do with the original iPhone? Best advice – keep it as a backup.
