Taking the Show on the Road – Virgin Mobile Festival’s Streaming Video

With the release of Virgin Mobile Festival’s Streaming Video the door is opening for performances of major concerts to be released via streaming mobile. In December, 2008 Virgin Mobile announced that customers of Virgin Mobile USA and Helio would be able to access streaming videos of the 2008 Virgin Mobile Festival.
This streaming video performance was the first from a major festival that was made available to mobile clients across the mobile platform. The Verizon Mobile Festival featured highly popular artists such as Iggy Pop, KT Tunstall, The Offspring, Sharon Jones, The Dap Kings, and Rodrigo y Gabriella.
Customers of Virgin Mobile with the Shuttle handset and who are opted-in to Virgin-XL would automatically be eligible for the streaming video, for those who are not opted in to Virgin-XL there would be a fifteen cent charge for access.
For Helio customers who use the Ocean, Mysto, Fin or Heat they would be able to access the streaming video. As with Virgin Mobile, they need to be part of the “All In” play or the would be charge five cents per kilobyte of data streamed.
The Future of Streaming Video
This addition to the video platform available to mobile customers opens doors for musicians and their fans to stay connected even on the go. Streaming concert footage from one city sent to fans in other cities could be an advantageous marketing tool. The fans would be anxious to purchase tickets having seen the streaming content.
It also provides the opportunity for other sources to reach the masses while they are on the go.
Streaming video could bring streaming classrooms to students who can’t make it to the classroom. Newscasts could be streamed live as they are being broadcast to keep people up to date on events in real time.
In addition to being able to stream events and concerts, mobile users would be able to capture live any event or activity they happen upon. Grandma in Kentucky could see the baby at the first circus or first haircut while it is happening.
Virgin Mobile Festival’s Streaming Video may have been the first to offer the service but you can rest assured that other carriers are catching up. Soon, if you can’t make it to the show perhaps you can catch it on your mobile device.
