The history of the cell phone is one that is littered by all the various cellular phone plans that are made available for us to choose from. The purpose of these differing cell phone plans is not to confuse us (which may sometimes seem like the idea behind it all) but to help us choose what’s right for us, especially now with so many free cell phone offers about.

Because each of us have differing requirements from our phones, the competing carriers like ALLTEL, Cingular, T-Mobile, AT&T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, Nextel, Voicestream, MCI Worldcom, Tracfone, Sprint PCS, Liberty Wireless; each eager for our custom - try to match up services that fit what we want and need.

This is to avoid frustration, but having to choose from the options involved in using cellular phones can unfortunately cause a bit of this too.

A good cell phone plan for you will involve such matters as the basic monthly fee and additional airtime rate; so let’s consider what you may want, and here honesty is always the best policy, because otherwise you’ll only be harming yourself at a later date. Either with having to pay higher fees for when you go over an allowance that was set too low, or conversely, being lumbered with airtime you don’t need but still pay for.

For a better chance at avoiding these and other woes take a pause and rationally think out how much you will be using your cell phone; how many people you know and like (or not like but need to talk to anyways) is a starter for this, and where it is that they live or work as well.

  • Are all your circle of friends, relatives and business contacts near to you? If so, then don’t involve yourself with a national cell phone plan where one with cheaper calls locally or regionally would better fit your circumstances.
  • If you do have to use your cell phone to call long distance often, then obviously choose from the cell plans where you can get this for a cheaper rate or even free if you pay a standard monthly fee.
  • Roaming is often a complicated (and expensive) matter as well, so check the service coverage of the various cell phone carriers where you live and where those you will be calling reside as well.

Timing is Everything

Cellular phone plans can vary considerably as we know, but rather than worrying about this, you should use it to your advantage to get the best deal you can. Doing a search for a cellular plan by price or by minutes required can help if you know roughly what you want before you start, but also think about other things like text messages as well. If these are included in your cellular plan they can cut down on the price of calls and overall airtime used.

Remember that the hours of peak time can vary and that the airtime on your cellular plan will have day / night and weekend restrictions included which will cost more for overuse.

Family plans can be very useful for lowering cost; this is where a number of cell phones share a quota of monthly minutes between them all - so chatterboxes beware of hogging!

In addition to this, many cell phone plans have fixed contract lengths, so make sure that plan changes are permitted once you’ve signed, and whether a cancellation aka termination, fee applies if you want out.

Prepaid cell phones are a way around some of these latter factors, and simpler in the long run for lighter users, but the rates are more expensive to reflect this lesser use.

Matching Up

As well the cellular plan matching your needs, it also has to match one of those smart new phones you’ve got your beady eye fixed on longingly. PDA phones, camera phones or GPS phones are just some of the choices involved in cell phone comparisons, but remember that not all cellular plans are compatible with all types or brands of cell phones.

So although cell phone reviews can help you choose what you want, it may not fit the plan you need.
