December 08, 2005 By: Matt Jacks What Is The Cell Phone Speech Recognition Feature? We’ve had cell phone speech recognition for a while now in the form of voice dialing. This is quite convenient, and a feature of many wireless handsets available today. Cellular phones with speech recognition like this can make things easier and safer too. Like when at the wheel of your car for instance. As talking to your phone, snug in its cell phone dash mount perhaps, is easier than reaching for it to make a call. But phones which allow speech recognition dialing often only permit a certain percentage of your handset’s internal phone book to be accessed via the voice dial function. This is because of memory limitations. In speech recognition voice dialing, you may have to record the name first. This is for security reasons, so the name will only be recognized by your phone if spoken in your voice. In other versions the phone will match the sound with the right name amongst your contacts no matter who speaks into it. Cell phone voice notes are certainly helpful, but voice commands would be too. Negotiating through your mobile phone’s menu options for example, would sometimes be more convenient and time-saving by being able to use speech recognition. But cell phones with speech recognition that’s more savvy and wider in application than these beginnings are already on the way. Samsung have recently produced a speech-to-text phone feature where the cellular handset will convert your words into a text message. Some handsets will also allow you to send this message by voice command too. Another option is too record message templates for saving time when sending off standard text business responses; when the personal touch is not needed. And in the future we will see other phone features like cell phone picture messaging and MP3 players also controlled via speech recognition.
