What Is The Cell Phone Maps Feature?

Mobile phones have always been handy things to have. One of the cool ways they could help was by calling someone to ask for directions as you got nearer to where they were. Then along came text messaging to see the directions in words. But now cell phone maps have arrived!

And this feature takes the whole navigation and location finding thing to a new level. Having cell phone map technology in your handset is predicted by some industry insiders to soon become the next “must have” after the global phenomenon of cellular camera phones.

There are different ways for this idea to work. But the common theme is that you must have either a cellular handset with integrated GPS (Global Positioning System) or a GPS receiver and a phone linked together via Bluetooth.

GPS was designed by the US military during the cold war. And is the reason you know where you are, as signals are constantly sent out by satellites orbiting the earth. And these can be used to pinpoint any location down to a few meters. And all in real time.

One option for navigating with cellular maps is to have an atlas in a SD or MMC card for your cell phone’s memory slot. Another way of getting access to maps is through services like MapQuest and TeleNav and others. Here you can pay for data services as downloaded apps (applications) to your phone from your cellular service provider.

You will then know where you are and be able to get directions either in audio or by following the arrows on your phone’s screen.

Maps may be used either to find locations like hotels, restaurants or tourist hot-spots. Or for wider navigating around a new city, state or country where you’re not sure of your bearings.
