May 17, 2005 By: Alison Lelliott Nokia Cell Phone Games - Using Multiplayer Java FunctionalityNokia has released its first round of multiplayer Java games based on its SNAP Mobile solution. The Scalable Network Application Package (SNAP) Mobile solution offer multiplayer cell phone games in Java, as well as key communication features such as friends lists, presence, and instant messaging for wireless phones. The Sega cell phone game options are a prime example of SNAP Mobile bringing wireless technology utilized in the N-Gage Arena gaming community to Java terminals which are now almost ubiquitous. SNAP Mobile allows game developers access to the network tools to be able to create mobile multiplayer, connected games for cell phones everywhere, with special compatibility to the N-Gage Arena system and even build and expand their own gaming communities. The SNAP Mobile system offers a platform for multiplayer based gaming along with community type features including chatting, presence monitoring (when people are on and offline) and ranking support for tournaments and competitions. Gamers generally like to link into a community to play and compete, to chat with friends and meet like-minded people. A gaming community allows people to interact with both the game and other people in a truly mobile sense. Users and gamers are able to play anywhere, anytime. The server components for SNAP Mobile wireless phones can be licensed by mobile operators and other game developers and providers or they can opt for a hosted community service with SEGA and Nokia. Irrespective of the option they choose, service providers will be able to create, build and brand their own truly mobile gaming community.
