Agfa Licenses Cell Phone Fonts – Chinese Text Phone Reap Rewards

Agfa Monotype Corporation – one of the world’s major supplier of fonts and font technologies around the world - has recently licensed a Chinese font with Latin support and the company's iType cell phone font engine to Motorola. The cell phone fonts system will be fully integrated in Motorola cell phones that display Chinese text from 2004 onwards.

The Agfa and Motorola alliance is a significant one as it underscores the industries commitment to provide fonts and technologies that benefit the user of such memory-constrained yet memory intensive devices like mobile cell phones. The font systems integrate very successful into Motorola cell phone products because they are small in code size, unlimited in language support, offer fast rendering speeds and are superior in terms of display quality.

Mobile phones provide people with complete mobility and an ability to stay in contact at every turn – this is great for both personal and professional pursuits. Text messaging is a key component of the cellular phone experience and the architecture that supports this must be useful and reliable.

Motorola has licensed a customized Chinese font with calligraphic characteristics and a Latin subset for wireless text transmissions when communicating in North American or Western European languages. It has also licensed iType, Agfa Monotype's font engine which allows for the rapid generation of scalable characters at virtually any size. In addition to over 1,300 TrueType fonts, compact stroke-based fonts and Agfa Monotype's WorldType multi-language fonts, iType also offers custom typefaces, bitmaps, embedded bitmaps, outlines and font subsets for mobile cellular phones.
