Cell Phone Etiquette – Good Manners Are Always Important

According to a recent survey of cell phone subscribers, 42 percent responded that most Americans never use their cell phone in a polite manner and never adhere to cell phone etiquette. Yet a huge 95 percent claimed that they communicate in a courteous manner if not every time but at least most of the time.

AT&T Wireless, a year back, specially conducted a survey to check the etiquette and attitudes of cell phone users. The courtesy attitudes had changed since it released comparable findings one year ago. Every year, July is called as "Wireless Etiquette Month." The excellent news is that the majority of wireless subscribers and cellular phone users do believe others, at least the majority of the time, follow cell phone courtesy and etiquette. Nowadays, cellular phone subscribers are very familiar with cellular phones features which would promote courtesy use.

In fact, a vast percentage of survey respondents claimed that in some circumstances it is courteous to set a cellular phones ringer to "silent" or vibrate" and 89 percent stated to have done so.

Around 70 percent of survey respondents agreed that sending an SMS would show courtesy to those around them, rather than making an actual cellular phone call.

Most of the survey respondents believe that their fellow mobile phone users need to undertake a lesson in wireless etiquette and courtesy, around 58 percent did agree that most Americans speak politely at least most of the time.

The question now is what can be done to raise America's mobile phone courtesy quotient? AT&T Wireless suggests that mobile phone users take a new evaluation of their own manners and consider the following cellular phone tips:

  • Avoid screaming.
  • Speak slowly and not loudly.
  • Turn off your mobile in public places.
  • If you're in a restaurant, museum, library, theater, train etc - turn off your mobile phones and let any incoming calls go to voicemail or set your ringer to "silent" or "vibrate" mode.
  • Take it outside. If you want to call somebody while you're in any of these locations, step outside before doing so. Some public places, such as theaters, museums and trains, may have “Cell phone” areas where you can use them.
  • Ask before you take pictures. There are certain places where photography is prohibited, don't use a mobile camera phone where taking pictures is prohibited. Ask for permission before snapping someone’s picture.
