Cell Phone Etiquette – Decorous Communication

As with the use of any other device, certain norms have to be followed while using a cell phone. Maintaining cell phone etiquette makes communication pleasant, rather than making it just convenient.

Whether people follow cell phone courtesy or not is a subjective issue. Most people feel they follow cellular etiquette themselves, but others don’t. However, most of the time people acknowledge courtesy with cell phone use. People are gradually becoming aware of those cell phone features, which are meant for upholding manners in cell phone use. The month of July is celebrated as the “Wireless Etiquette month” every year to generate awareness on the issue.

Most people claim to use the cellular phones “Silent” mode and the text-messaging feature instead of a voice call, in public places. One should keep a note of some points while using cell phones. These serve as handy tips for maintaining your cellular phones etiquette. Normally there is no need to speak too loudly on the cell phone in order to be heard. One should set the mobile phone to the “Silent” or the “Vibrate” mode in public places.

Also, using the cellular phones text message option is preferable to voice calls in such situations. There are separate areas to make and receive phone calls in public places and one should make proper use of them. If need be, the cell should be switched off with the voice mail option on. One should also be careful while using camera phones. Rules should be adhered to if photography is prohibited. Otherwise too, it is courtesy to ask for permission before taking a snap.

It is important to understand that judging others is easier than judging oneself. Most of us have a mixed opinion about etiquettes of cell phone use. We need to implement all that we expect others to do.
