January 06, 2005 By: Nathan Menzies AT&T Wireless International Text Messaging – A Bridge Over The AtlanticAT&T Wireless international text messaging will prove to be a boon for easy communication across the landmasses on the two sides of the Atlantic. According to the survey conducted by KRC Research of London, most people mistakenly thought that text messaging was possible between the US and the UK. AT&T Wireless has however given this misconception a real face. It has added the UK to its list of countries with whom text messaging is enabled. Presently, AT&T Wireless has reciprocal text messaging services running with 130 foreign carriers in more than 50 countries. A sure majority of the world’s wireless community can now easily communicate with AT&T Wireless’s customers. Most people find SMS text messages to be the most convenient and economical way of keeping in touch with work, friend and family. According to the survey by the KRC research, 60% more people will avail of the intercontinental text messaging service after AT&T Wireless has introduced it. This will considerably increase the use of text messaging on both sides of the Atlantic. AT&T Wireless was one of the 1st to provide the service in the US back in October 2000. There has been no looking back since then. In November 2001,it became the 1st to provide inter carrier text messaging service. In July 2002 it was the first provider of color picture messaging service. In February 2003, multimedia-messaging service (MMS) was introduced allowing a combination of pictures, animations, text and sound to be sent to and fro. The international text messaging service is available to all customers with compatible handsets. US customers can send international messages at around $.25 per message. While roaming abroad, sending and receiving international messages cost around $.50 per message. The other countries serviced by AT&T Wireless’ international messaging include the Philippines, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Australia, Ireland and Italy. Author Notes:
