This cell phone service is available even if the cruise ship is in the middle of the ocean.

The cellular service on the cruise ship is provided by Wireless Maritime Services, a joint venture of AT&T Wireless cell phones and Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN).

The company officials say that though some guests does not want to remain connected while on the cruise ship, there are many passengers who prefer to remain connected on their cell phones, with their loved ones or some important business associates while on the cruise ship.

Incidentally, NCL was the first cruise liner to provide Internet access to its passenger’s way back in 2002. Now, the cellular service will be first introduced in Norwegian Sun and gradually the cell phones service will be operational in the entire fleet within a year.

The technology to be used is a combination of satellite and wireless services as the passengers will be able to connect through their GSM phones even in the faraway waters where satellite help will be required to remain connected. MTN is an expert in providing Satellite services to the cruise industry.

This cell service can be used with cellular phones operating at 900 MHz and 1900 MHz. Here, passengers will be able to make and receive cell phone voice calls and also send and receive text messages. Moreover, if a passenger has got data-capable GSM/GPRS devices to access data services, he can do that. It includes email and cell phones picture messaging.
