Cell Phones For Teens – Very Popular In The United States

A survey of parents and teens in New York and Los Angeles by AT&T Wireless has revealed that 86 percent of teens already have a cell phone. With the national penetration of cellular phones not yet touching 60% in the US, it seems that cell phones for teens are growing at a very fast rate.

94 percent of parents support cell phones for students. The teenagers have their first cellular phone between the ages of 13 and 17 years. Interestingly, that coincides with the 94 percent of teens between the age 13 to 17 who have said that they already have a cellular phone.

Regarding who is going to pay for the students cellular service, 30 percent of both parents and the teens feel that the person using the cell phone should pay for it. About 65 percent of parents and 69 percent of teens think that parents should pay for the cellular phone and service, or that they should split the cost 50/50.

It is a misconception that teenagers are given cell phones for dating or talking to friends. The cell phones are mainly given for the teens to report car breakdowns, to arrange for pick-up after school, and to let the students keep in touch with their parents.

Based on this need, AT&T Wireless has announced some affordable prepaid cellular plans, popularly known as GoPhone. It starts from as low as around $19.99 and credit card or electronic fund transfer facilities can also be availed. It has no annual contract, no credit checks and no cancellation fee.

If a family wants to go for sharing a calling plan, then the $59.99 AT&T Wireless GSM America Local plan gives them an option of adding more lines for their teens; they can do so at an extra cost of only $9.99. The plan offers many attractive features that include free evening calling beginning at 7:00 p.m., unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling to other AT&T Wireless customers.
