December 30, 2004 By: Bill Schnarr What Is A Cell Phone Car Adapter?A cell phone car adapter is a device that is used by cell phones to either take advantage of existing car audio equipment or to take advantage of a car power source, antenna, or other useful device. The most common type of cellular phone car adapters are the plug-in power cord for recharging cell phones and batteries. This is a simple input converter that has a “bullet” style plug-in on one end and a plug-in jack on the other. The adapter bullet fits into your cigarette lighter socket and can then use the power generated by the automobile and it’s battery to recharge your cellular phone batteries. Another type of cell phone adapter is a device that plugs into your car stereo so that the audio capabilities of your vehicle can be used with your phone. Similar to a speaker phone, this type of adapter picks up your voice (along with any ambient noise in the car) through the cellular phones and then uses your speakers as a receiver for true hands-free enjoyment. By simply hitting a button on your phone, you can talk while you drive and get all the great sound that your stereo can afford. The only problem with this type of adapter and interaction is that you essentially have no privacy; anyone in the car with you when you use this feature is effectively on the telephone with you because they can hear the conversation and speak to the person on the other line as easily as you can. Finally, a common form of cellular phone adapter is one in which your car stereo antenna is used to enhance or boost the signal of your cell phone while you drive. Since your cell phones antenna is much smaller than the antenna in your car (due to the nature of radio transmission your car itself plays an important part in signal strength) you can plug cell phone adapters into your car stereo and use the longer, more powerful antenna with your cellular phone. This can be a very effective tool for your cell phones if you have problems with signal strength or if you are out of town and far away from the nearest cellular phone booster tower.
