Helping You Connect! |

December 30, 2004 By: Bill Schnarr What Is The Cell Phone Wi Fi Feature?Cell Phone Wi-Fi is a technology used to provide wireless connectivity between any kind of mobile data device (Laptops, PDA’s, and Cell Phones) and a nearby wireless access hub connected to a network or the internet. Wi-Fi is actually a trademarked term coined by the Wi-Fi Cellular Alliance, a wireless industry association dedicated to the progression of wireless evolution (among other things). The IEEE technical assignment is 802.11. Of this, however, there are a couple variants. The most prevalent form in technology today is 802.11b, capable of transmitting at speeds of up to 11 Mbps. The Range of a Wi-Fi network depends on the strength of its phones hardware devices, but generally it is anywhere from 50 to 300 feet indoors and up to 2000 feet outside. This difference in range is primarily due to the fact that walls and floors can impede the transmission process. Wi-Fi is generally run in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed frequency band. Many other types of wireless technologies share this frequency, such as some cellular phones and Bluetooth wireless technology. One of the greatest advantages to Wi-Fi (especially cell phone Wi-Fi) is that these wireless networks can be set up anywhere, at any time, and by anyone. They are popping up in busy airport coffee shops (or anywhere else where internet business professionals tend to conglomerate), internet cafés, or even hotels who serve a substantial amount of business travel. This is also a network you can set up in your home or business with little or no difficulty. That way, all of your computers, PDA’s, and even cellular phones can be connected to one another for easy and seamless transmission of information. Another amazing ability for Wi-Fi users to take advantage of is the ability to “link” phones and devices together without being connected to the internet, allowing for transmission from one device to another without the need for a central “command center”. For cellular phone Wi-Fi, that means instant access to email and text messaging, as well as constant updates for PC Sync modes and other “shared” features. With cell phone Wi-Fi, it could also give cell phone companies such as ALLTEL and companies such as AT&T the ability to send things like news ticker updates and up-to-the-minute weather updates directly to your cellular phone. Of course, these phones features are still on their way, but it gives a bit of an idea as to just how important this technology is going to be to phones and devices in the near future.
