December 30, 2004 By: Bill Schnarr What Is The Cell Phone Web Browsing Feature?Cell phone web browsing is the ability for a cell phone to access web pages on the internet once a proper connection has been established. Cellular phone internet browsing is for the most part a software function used by your cell phone to become part of the World Wide Web. If your phone has the ability to view or browse web pages, it will process and reformat HTML (HyperText Markup Language) so that you can see it properly on your cellular phone screen. HTML code is the basic language of the internet; it tells your browsing tool what to show on the screen and where. Of course, standard internet web sites have been optimized for full-sized computer screens with decent amounts of RAM and at least an adequate processor speed. This is not the case for a standard cellular phone to browse the internet. Cell phones have tiny processors (if at all, some don’t!) and a finite amount of RAM memory that is used for things such as contact lists and custom ringtone settings. That means that any cellular phone internet browsing has (in the past) been limited at best, and nearly impossible at the worst. Things are starting to change with the next generation of PDA cell phones on the market and a need for more web-savvy cell phones. PDA cellular phones act just like tiny desktop computers, including having their own OS (Operating System) and web browser for surfing the internet. Next-generation technology from companies such as LG and the folks over at Mitsubishi will most likely have the ability to browse, accept and reprocess HTML code and other forms of web language, granting the ability to see a cell phone-optimized web page. In fact, there will most likely be a time in the future when you will browse onto internet pages optimized for cellular phones only, and you’ll see a message saying "This Page Best Viewed by Motorola Cell Phone Users..."
