MCI Camera Phones — From Wireless To Wi-Fi

MCI, an early leader in mobile phone technology, sold its wireless assets to Nextel several years ago. Now, thanks to the growing popularity of WiFi, some cell phone users may find themselves back with MCI phones. WiFi is standard that lets you make a wireless camera phone connection to the Internet. Thanks to MCI camera phones with PDA technology can access the Internet at WiFi Hot Spots across the country.

MCI has made its Internet service available to Wi-Fi Hot Spot companies like Boingo and Wayport. If you have an Internet account with MCI, camera phone PDAs (personal digital assistants) are an easy way to high speed access to the Internet. Rather than use your cell phone talk time, you can make a wireless cell phone connection through the Wi-Fi antenna.

For camera phone road warriors there is the HP iPAQ h6315, high-end camera phones built around Pocket PC technology. These phones have built-in WiFi technology, letting you connect to the Internet at Hot Spots around the country. Built-in Bluetooth lets you synchronize your camera phones wirelessly to your laptop or personal computer.

The Motorola MPx is an exciting new “smartphone” that flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keypad. An integrated 1.2 megapixel camera takes crystal clear digital snapshots that make nice 4 x 6 inch enlargements. Operating on GSM and GPRS networks, you can have wireless Internet access through your cell phone carrier while you’re on the road. Stop at an airport, cafe or hotel with a Wi-Fi Hot Spot and you can get on the Internet using your MCI account.

Both of these camera phones let you run “pocket” versions of your favorite Microsoft applications, like Outlook, Word and Excel.

MCI’s new Wi-Fi service lets you connect to the Internet wherever you are, from Northport, Alabama to Tempe, Arizona or even Alhambra, California.
