What Is A Cell Phone Antenna?

You may not realize it but your wireless telephone is actually a powerful two-way radio. Hidden inside the telephone, a cell phone antenna is used to transmit or receive signals from a nearby base station antenna.

Cell phone antennas have a big job to do. They must be powerful enough to broadcast and receive in all directions, yet they must not emit enough radiation to harm the user.

The antenna on some cellular phones is clearly visible and can be extended to improve reception. Other cell phones leave the antenna concealed in a stub that extends beyond the case while yet other models of cell phones completely conceal the antenna inside the case. Manufacturers disagree but some experts argue that cell phones with extendable antennas get better reception than those with concealed antennas.

While extendable antennas may send a stronger signal they are also more easily broken than stub antennas. Replacement antennas are available for Motorola, LG, Samsung, Audiovox and other cell phones with extendable antennas.

A number of companies sell “antenna boosters”, a flexible printed circuit that adheres to the inside of your cell phone under the battery. Some people swear that they get and improved cellular signal in “dead spots.” Others argue that the boosters don’t work at all and a few people feel that they get worse reception with the booster on their mobile phones.

Auxiliary vehicle antennas can improve reception while driving. Compare prices and specs and find one with good reviews. The best have an RF connector that plugs into a cradle that attaches to the phone. Some lower cost auxiliary cellular antennas may provide no benefit at all.

Antenna flashers are a great novelty item, sure to get attention at a party. These have a light emitting diode that attaches to the antenna and flashes during an incoming call.
