October 19, 2004 By: Jane Connelly What Is A Cell Phone Microphone? One of the things that makes today’s cellular phones so compact and lightweight is the ability to miniaturize the microphone that you speak into. This same technology applies to mobile phone headsets—the cell phone microphone on most headsets is so small that you barely know it is there. Compare cell phone microphones on a variety of headsets and you’ll notice that each has a slightly different placement. Some microphones are positioned at the end of an arm or a “boom” in order to be close to the user’s mouth. Several types of boom microphones can be extended during conversations and retracted when not in use. Other cell phone microphones are positioned farther down the cable about mouth level. These are less obvious than boom mics but they tend to move with the cable, at times causing your voice to fade in and out as you talk on your cellular phones. Most have a small shirt clip to keep the cable in place. One other place to position a cellular phone microphone is in the earpiece itself. While it might seem that these mics are too far away from the user’s mouth to have a clear cellular phone conversation many of them actually work very well. The best wireless phone microphones have additional features such as a mute button. Pressing the button mutes the call so you can talk to people in the room without interfering with your cell phones conversation. High quality cell phone microphones are optimized to pick up the sound of your voice without capturing the sounds of traffic or music in the background. Top-of-the-line cellular microphones have sound canceling technology to screen out background noise. Nokia, Mitsubishi and Sony Ericsson phones may need microphone headsets with a special plug. Most LG, Motorola and Kyocera phones can use universal headsets with a 2.5mm headset jack.
