October 19, 2004 By: Jane Connelly What Is A Cell Phone Earpiece?Cellular phones bring new levels of freedom and mobility to users. Hands-free headsets take that freedom to new levels, allowing users to go about daily activities without being encumbered by a telephone. One thing that differentiates headsets is the cell phone earpiece. Cell phone earpieces consist of a tiny speaker, called an earphone, coupled with some way to hold the earpiece securely to the ear. A microphone may be combined with the earpiece or it may be positioned somewhere on the cable that connects to the mobile phone. Over-the-ear headsets have a small loop that goes over the top of the head, holding the cellular earpiece in place. The earpiece may have a foam wind cover or it may have a metal or plastic cover. Most over-the-ear cell phone ear pieces can be adjusted to fit the right or left ear. Earbud-style cell phone earpieces fit loosely in the ear without entering the ear canal. These let you hear cellular phone conversations clearly without blocking out sounds in the environment. The downside of cellular earbuds is that they can drop out of the ear easily. Other cell phone headsets have an earpiece with a soft rubber tip that fits snugly and comfortably in the ear canal. This style of cellular earpiece gives you clear audio and is less likely to pop out of your ear in the middle of a conversation. Nokia, Motorola, LG, and Kyocera each make their own brand of cellular headsets with different styles of earpieces. Other companies make universal headsets to fit these phones, making it easier for users to comparison shop online and find the best earpiece for their needs.
