October 19, 2004 By: Jane Connelly What Is A Cell Phone Faceplate? You don’t dress the same way every day, so why should your phone? A cell phone faceplate is a fun, fashionable way to change the look of your wireless phone. While the term “faceplate” sounds like a plate that fits over the face of your cell phone it is actually part of the phone’s housing. Faceplates typically come with a front and back shell that replaces the housing currently on your cellular phone. Changing face plates gives your mobile phone a totally different look. Nokia cellular phones were among the first to offer changeable faceplates, but other companies have been quick to catch up. You can find cellular phones with changeable faceplates from Motorola, Samsung, LG…practically any cell phone on the market. Faceplates require professional installation on some types of cellular phones. Others pop apart with the press of a button. Some cell phone models don’t need to be opened in order to change the faceplate. Kyocera’s Phantom series of wireless phones have interchangeable accents called “masks.” Other cellular phones have snap-in-place covers. Sometimes the terms “cover” and “faceplate” are used interchangeably. The great thing about cell phone face plates is that they come in just about any style imaginable. Feeling patriotic? Red, white and blue American flag faceplates are very popular. You can also find wireless phone faceplates in the season’s latest colors, in metallic tones, translucent and even a high tech carbon fiber look. Changing the faceplate is a great time to put in a new keypad. A keypad is the vinyl skin that protects the push-buttons on most cell phones. Keypads come in a rainbow of colors. There are crystal keypads with gemlike keys and keypads that flash different colors during an incoming call. With the faceplate off it is easy to remove the old keypad and slip in a new one.
