What Is A Cell Phone Over The Ear Headset?

Cellular phone headsets give you the freedom to carry on a conversation without holding a telephone to your ear. A cell phone over-the-ear headset gives you the security of knowing that the earpiece won’t drop out of your ear in the middle of a conversation.

While there are many styles of cell phone over-the-ear headsets, they all have one thing in common—they stay in place by a small loop that goes over the top of the ear. Other cellular phone headsets have an earpiece that rests inside the ear or fits gently in the ear canal. A few headsets for cellular phones have a band that goes over the top of the head. Most over-the-ear headsets can be adjusted for the right or left ear.

Compare headsets and you’ll find that the main difference is in microphone placement. A boom microphone extends several inches to get the mic as close to the user’s mouth as possible. Several models have a microphone boom that can be collapsed when not in use. Other mobile phone headset models have the microphone built into the cable several inches below the earpiece. Finally, some headsets have the microphone built into the earpiece itself.

The best cell phone over-the-ear headsets give the user some control over their wireless phone. The cellular headset may have an answer/end button or it may have a mute button that lets you put a caller on “hold” while you discuss personal matters.

If you don’t like the snarl and tangle of a headset cord, look for a mobile over-the-ear headset with a retractable cord. People with Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones can get wireless over-the-ear headsets that allow cell phone conversations with no cable connection between the phone and the headset.

Nokia, Sony Ericsson and some other wireless phones require headsets with special connectors designed for the particular model of phone. Motorola, LG, Kyocera and other phones can use a universal headset with a 2.5mm phone jack.
