What Is A Cell Phone Car Kit?

A cell phone car kit can reduce some of the risk from driving while carrying on a conversation over a mobile phone. A car kit often includes a holder that eliminates fumbling for your cell phone to answer an incoming call. A car kit usually has features that allow hands-free use of wireless phones.

Cell phone car kits come with a wide variety features. Some kits require professional installation. These are typically wired into the sound system, muting the vehicle's stereo during calls. Nokia, Motorola, Kyocera and other companies also have portable handsfree kits that require no installation. A portable kit can be used in a car with a cellular phones vehicle holder and later taken to the home or office for use as a speakerphone.

Most cellular phone car kits operate using a built-in speakerphone. A microphone picks up your voice as you talk and a speaker broadcasts the voice of the person on the other end. Some cellular car kits operate using a handsfree earpiece, and other kits give you the option of using either the speakerphone or the earpiece. A number of companies make headrest cellular car kits with a speaker and microphone that clip to a vehicle's headrest for maximum sound quality.

The most advanced car kits offer voice recognition, allowing the user to speak names or phone numbers for hands free dialing. Some of these kits automatically mute the vehicle's sound system during outgoing or incoming calls.

Owners of Bluetooth-enabled phones, such as those made by Sony Ericsson, may want to consider a Bluetooth car phones kit. These kits make a wireless connection to the telephone and let you speak hands free. Some car kits give you the choice of talking over the speakerphone or with a wireless Bluetooth headset.
