What Is A Cell Phone FM Stereo Radio Headset?

Many people don't realize it but a cellular phone is actually a two-way radio designed to operate at a specific frequency. If you could add a tuner to your mobile telephone you could receive a much wider spectrum—including FM radio stations. A cell phone FM stereo radio headset lets you use your wireless telephone as a portable FM radio.

Many cell phone FM stereo radio headsets have a "mute" feature that automatically cancels the FM stereo radio during calls and restores the FM stereo radio when the call is answered.

When shopping online for an FM stereo radio headset it is important to get the best match for your mobile. Some mobile phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and other companies have the tuner built into the cellular itself. You access it by using the keypad. An FM stereo radio headset for these phones consists of stereo headphones, a microphone for conversations, and an answer/end button to operate the telephone while it is stashed away in a pocket.

For wireless phones without an integral FM tuner, there are stereo headsets with the tuner built in. Many of these tuners plug into the phone's data port and mute the radio automatically during calls.

Some companies make a universal FM radio stereo headset that fits any phone with a 2.5mm jack. Universal radio headsets require an additional battery to power the radio. The best universal telephone headsets have an answer/end button, letting you manually mute the radio during calls.

FM radios need longer antennas than cellular telephones do. Rather than requiring users to add one more component to their phones, manufacturers have designed radio headsets to do the work of the antenna. People who use their FM-enabled cellular phones as a desk radio using stereo speaker accessories may need to leave the headset in place to get good reception.
