October 19, 2004 By: Jane Connelly What Is A Cell Phone USB Data Cable?Today's cellular devices are more than just portable telephones. More and more mobile phones do double duty as wireless information centers. These phones can be linked to a personal computer using a cell phone USB data cable, letting users easily transfer information from one device to the other. USB is short for "universal serial bus", the standard for connecting computers to peripheral devices such as printers, hard drives and cameras. Cell phone USB data cables are used to transfer names, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses and URLs for home pages from computers to mobile phones. Certain models of cell phones by Motorola, NEC, Siemens, Samsung and other manufacturers come with software that can be installed on personal computer to let users manage address books, calendars, schedules and alarms. Information stored on the computer can be shared with one or more telephones using a USB data cable. Cell phones with a built-in digital camera or video camera can upload digital pictures or video clips using cell phone USB data cables. Music files in MP3 format can be downloaded to cellular telephones that have MP3 capability. Laptop owners can use their data-enabled cellular phones as a modem to make a wireless connection to the Internet. A USB data cable is used to connect the cell phone with the laptop. The availability of this service depends upon the features of one's calling plan as well as the capabilities of the particular model of phone. Bluetooth enabled cell phones can transmit data to a personal computer or laptop as long as the computer is equipped with a Bluetooth card. These phones make a wireless connection with other Bluetooth devices and don't need data cables. However, if the PC or laptop is not Bluetooth enabled, a connection can still be made using a USB data cable.
