October 19, 2004 By: Jane Connelly What Is A Cell Phone Joy Stick?A joy stick is a lever that moves forward, backward and to each side. Computer gamers use joy sticks to move through the scenes of arcade-style video games. A cell phone joy stick helps users navigate menus and play games on a mobile phone. Cell phone joy sticks are relatively new additions to cell phone keypads. Sony Ericsson makes a number of cellular phones with an integrated joystick. Some users believe the Sony Ericsson joystick is one of the best ways to browse menus on any cellular telephone. The joystick moves through menus more quickly, compared to keypad navigation. Pressing the joystick button activates the cellular camera on models with a built-in digital camera. Nokia has a range of cellular phones that also have built-in cell pone joy sticks. Their 6000 series of wireless phones come equipped with five way joysticks for easy navigation. Because more and more cellphones let you download games, a joy stick makes the cellular phone respond like a lightweight game controller. Using the joy stick is faster than using the keypad, especially when gaming. Of course many mobile phones don’t have an integral joystick. That doesn’t mean that owners of these cellular phones are out of luck. A number of companies offer add-on joysticks. Some of these slide over the faceplate, turning the phone into a pocket-size game controller for fast and furious arcade style gaming. LG, Samsung and other wireless phones may come with a five way navigation key described as a joystick or as having “joystick action.” While these five way keys are technically not the same thing, they do offer the same type of control as a five way joystick.
