Cell Phones – Why Go Wireless?

Cell phones, with their low prices and attractive service plans, are enticing today's consumers to get rid of their standard telephones. Now available with number portability, cell phones are making it even easier for cell phone users to leave landlines behind.

In one survey of 3,000 Michigan residents, as many as one-fourth of cellphone users under the age of 25 say they use their cell phone as their only telephone, and twenty-one percent said that they no longer have telephones at home. Cellular phone users cite costs and convenience as the main reasons to go wireless.

Regional or national plans that don’t charge for long distance or roaming are one huge advantage cell phones have over landlines. When you add the free nights and weekends that many companies offer, cellular users can save a bundle compared to the cost of traditional long distance service.

Annoying sales calls are a thing of the past for cellular users who dump the landlines. At least so far the cellular system seems to be safe from telemarketing agencies.

Since landline users don't experience the dead areas or the poor connections that sometimes plague cellular phone users, traditional phone service providers claim that their phones are more reliable than cell phones. One other advantage to using a landline is that emergency services are able to pinpoint the location of the caller using a traditional phone, but that sort of technology will soon be available to cellular phone users as well.

With number portability and the aggressive competition between cellular companies, more and more cellular phone users are expected to be going exclusively wireless.
