Cellular Supplier – Cleanup After Hurricane Disasters

Hurricane season hits cellular supplier. Cellular service suppliers trying to recover after multiple disasters. It's tough to be a cellular supplier in Florida these days. With Hurricane Frances taking over for where Hurricane Charley left off, the cellular supplier business took a double whammy. Cellular suppliers throughout the state of Florida took direct hits from both storms.

Hurricane Charley left cell service suppliers scrambling to get power to cell phone towers back up and running. In areas hardest hit by Hurrican Charley, as many as 180 Cingular cell towers and 140 Sprint towers were disabled. One cellular supplier said their towers had battery or generator power back ups, but some of those back ups were ineffective during the storms.

Immediately after one storm, at least 250,000 Sprint cellular customers were without service. Although Sprint Wireless is the leading cellular supplier in hard-hit Charlotte County, it took most of a week for the supplier to get cellular service restored to all of its customers.

After Hurrican Charley, Cingular Wireless had brought in 550 extra generators and COWs, Cellular on Wheels, hoping to be more prepared for when Frances hit. COWs are mobile towers that suppliers can move to locations where service has been disrupted. Cellular suppliers also increased their network capacity before Florida’s second hurrican. Suppliers, like Sprint and Cingular, furnished thousands of cell phones to emergency workers to aide disaster recovery efforts.

The disruptions would most likely have been much worse if cellular suppliers had not taken emergency measures before the hurricanes hit. Working together before the storms, the suppliers brought extra generators and personnel to the state.
