September 29, 2004 By: Jack Adams Cellular Coverages – Verizon COLTs & COWsVerizon's COLTs and COWs are roaming throughout the Midwest. The wireless giant hasn't expanded into the livestock market, rather, it has created new means of providing cellular coverages during emergencies. Mobile cell towers, COLTs and COWs can easily be moved to areas where cellular coverages have been disrupted. Verizon's definition of the term COLT, is "Cellular on Light Truck". With two COLTs ready to provide mobile cell coverage in North Dakota, disasters like floods, tornadoes or snowstorms, needn't mean that the area is cut off from outside communications. COLTs can immediately move into the area to keep cell phone coverage available. Equipped with an 80-foot retractable microwave cell tower, and powered by a diesel generator, each truck can provide coverage to a 15-mile radius. Each individual COLT is able to handle thousands of cell calls per hour and provides vital coverage in the wake of disaster. In the event of an emergency, all cell phones dialing 911 in the area are routed through the COLT whether the caller is a Verizon customer on not. The Verizon COW, or "Cellular on Wheels", operates just like the COLT but requires hard electrical wiring. COWs are intended to enhance or replace mobile cell coverage for a longer period of time, for example, when a cell phone tower is damaged but power remains on in the area. Verizon has herds of COLTs and COWs ready to provide emergency coverage to cell phone users in other states including Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa.
