September 29, 2004 By: Jack Adams Lightest Handsets – And The Winner Is…Bigger is not better in the cellular handset market. The best handset prize often goes to the smallest and the lightest handsets. In the quest to make lightest handsets, the competition is fierce and the margin of victory is razor thin. In March 2004, Tuka of Japan announced what it claimed was the world’s thinnest and lightest handset. Kyocera’s TK41 handset is 18.8 mm thick and weighs in at 89 ounces. But there are other contestants vying for the title of lightest cellular handsets. Motorola thought it had a lightweight contender but in fact it had a winner for the thinnest handset. When folded, the Motorola V3 Razr is just 14mm thick but unfortunately the Razr handset weighs a hefty 95 grams so it doesn’t exactly qualify as a light handset. CNETAsia has written an article that lists the top five lightest phones, each weighing less than 66 grams. One, or maybe two, aren’t actually handsets so let’s throw those out, which leaves us with three finalists for lightest cell phone handset. The third lightest is the Panasonic GD55 handset with a weight of 65 grams. Second place goes to the Haier 6000, tipping the scales at just 63 grams. And the title of “Lightest Cell Phone Handset” is tied between the Sony Ericcson T600 and the Haier 6000, both weighing just 63 grams.
