September 27, 2004 By: Jack Adams Cell Phone Software Developer – Standards Set By Nokia, VodafoneNokia and Vodafone are leading the way in helping the cell phone software developer groups work towards standardizing software methods. Announcing an initiative in August 2004, the companies will make it easier for a software developers to make Java applications that can run on multiple phone models. The goal is to modify the Java2 Micro Editions standards in order to define a more consistent architecture for applications. When implemented, the standards would benefit software developers, cell phone companies and consumers alike. With standards in place, cell phone software development companies would find that their applications would fit a broader market of cellular handsets. Cell phones use a variety of operating systems that each take a different approach to running Java applications and it is currently difficult for software development companies to modify their applications to fit the growing number of handsets. The new standards would make in possible for cell phone companies to offer their customers a greater variety of Java-based applications. Other major phone manufacturers such as Siemens, Orange, Ericcson, T-Mobile and Sony are trying to work with Nokia and Vodafone to support the software development initiative. The initiative should be ready to implement some time in 2005. Nokia and Vodafone are considering additional cell phone development software initiatives addressing security and component management.
