September 27, 2004 By: Jack Adams Wireless Data Networks – Used By PoliceThanks to wireless data networks, mobile workers in many different industries are now enjoying fully functional computer resources out in the field. New higher-speed wireless networks are making the wireless solution more suitable for all kinds of business and government use. A central office stays connected to all kinds of remote wireless devices with networks to support voice, text, images and Internet access. Wireless networks are also being utilized by transportation systems, utilities and more recently homeland security operations. Government agencies, such as the city of Aurora, Colorado, are turning to wireless to add efficiency to their operations. Aurora uses a wireless data network with Wi-Fi access to operate and monitor refuelling stations for all city-owned vehicles. Police departments also rely on data networks so that officers in the field can immediately access state and federal crime databases. In the health care industry, wireless databases are just starting to be created. It is estimated that the health care wireless data network market will grow to more than $7 billion by 2010. The healthcare industry now spends less than five percent of its gross income on wireless technology. The real estate industry has already incorporated data networks, enabling agents to access the Multi Listing Service and to send pictures of property to prospective buyers. Eventually the networks could even replace the lock box. Security codes could be sent through the airwaves to allow secure, keyless entry into properties on the market.
