September 27, 2004 By: Jack Adams Hard Of Hearing Cell Phone A Real CHAAMPA hard of hearing cell phone is now available in North America, thanks to a new technology known as CHAAMP. The Compatible Hearing Amplified Accessory for Mobile Phones (CHAAMP), is an innovative tool that turns a typical Nokia handset into a cell phone for the hearing impaired! This is what is meant by a "hard of hearing cell phone". CHAAMP, which is compatible with certain Nokia models, fits between the cell phone battery and the phone itself. CHAAMP is easy to install and adds several features to the phone that make it user-friendly for hearing impaired consumers who cant use regular cell phones. CHAAMP-enhanced cell phones for the hard of hearing offer advanced amplification controls which can add 30 dB of volume to the cell phone. Cell phone users who have difficulty hearing can also cut out lower level frequencies to make higher frequencies easier to hear. These cell phones for the hearing impaired ring very loudly and also flashe and vibrate. In the past, digital cell phones often interfered with hearing aid function, but the CHAAMP cell phone has a loop transmitter that works in conjunction with t-coil hearing aids. The phone is held just four inches in front of the face and so the audio signal goes directly to the hearing aid. Users can also hold the phone to one ear and hear equally well out of both ears through the t-coil hearing aids. CHAAMP has plans to introduce a newer version of this popular cell phone product in 2005.
