Satellite Phones – New Technology Is Out Of This World

Cell phones will work almost anywhere within range of a cellular tower. If you want to work or play in more remote locations, mobile satellite phones can keep you connected. Satellite phones are starting to provide many of the features and designs of regular cell phones.

Since cellular phones rely on signals from fixed wireless networks, tall buildings and mountain ranges often disrupt those signals. A satellite phone gets it signal from a vast network of satellites in the earth’s atmosphere. This network of satellites provides near global coverage.

Satellite phones are a great way to communicate for adventure travelers who may travel off of the beaten path. These phones will work deep into the woods, high up on a mountain or even on a remote island, as long as there is a clear sky above. Satellite phones can also be used at sea.

New GSM mobile satellite phones combine satellite and cellular technology into a single handset. Some handsets also incorporate GPS technology to help users pinpoint their location. The phone functions as a regular cell phone on GSM networks when they are in range. When there is no GSM signal, the phone automatically switches to a satellite network.

Satellite phones are available with voice mail, SMS and Internet access. Larger terminal-type satellite phones can also download video files. Keep in mind that just like cell phones, satellite phones require some sort of service contract or prepaid minutes.
