Cellular Phone Services – What You Should Know

Selecting a cell phone service provider can often be a time-consuming, complicated undertaking. Here are five things to look for, which should help you separate the best cellular phone services from the rest...

  • Coverage - Look carefully at the coverage map of each of the cell phone services that you are considering. Find out how strong the cell phone signal is in the coverage area? If you can, borrow a cell phone from a friend who uses the service you are considering, then drive around the coverage area and check the signal strength indicator at various locations.
  • Dropped Calls - Ask for references from friends. Ask if the service they’re using has a reputation for dropping calls.
  • Billing - Before you sign a contract with any cell phone service, ask to see a copy of a bill. Is it easy to understand? Do they round up the charge to the next minute? What will your payment terms be? Make sure to clearly define the length of your cell phone contract and any penalty you’ll have to pay if you want to get out early.
  • Price - To determine exactly what the cell phone service will cost, consider extras that the company may be providing as a promotion, such as a free phone, no roaming charges or free long distance.
  • Customer Service - Consider this one carefully. The Better Business Bureau says that cell phone services are among the most complained about industries. Many cell phone customers complain about slow or unresponsive customer service. If you want to find out what you’ll be dealing with before you buy, call the customer service number of the cellular service you are considering.
