Car Cell Phones – Necessity or Dangerous Nuisance?

Researchers have found that drivers are somewhat conflicted about the use of car cell phones. While some research has indicated that distracted driving causes accidents, The results of a recent poll of American motorists shows that while they claim to always drive safely, 44 percent admitted that they have used a cell phone while driving.

Many states and foreign governments are legislating against car cell phone use, while at the same time more cell phone users are ignoring those laws.

It's easy to see the irony in using a car cellular phone. While your reason for purchasing a cell phone may have been that you could stay connected when you’re away from home, typically when you’re away from home, you’re in your car.

As mentioned previously, many accidents appear to be caused by distracted drivers, so why do we still see drivers digging through their purse or briefcase for their car cell phone while driving to answer the phone or just to make sure that their phone is on?

In order to curb dangerous cell phone use in the car, we may need to first address, or admit to, the underlying problem — our addiction to being connected. Maybe cell phone companies need to air advertisements that say, “Hey, you really don’t need to be in touch all the time. It’s okay to turn of your cell phone when you’re in the car”, in order to get the message across. Well, instead of passing the buck, maybe we just need to admit to ourselves that we have a problem and discipline ourselves to drive unconnected.
