Toshiba’s Storage Device – Market’s Smallest

Toshiba now makes the world’s smallest hard disk drive. Toshiba’s storage disk will be included in the 2005 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Toshiba introduced the mini storage disk to the world in January 2004. It is the first hard disk drive to accommodate multi-gigabyte storage in a sub-one inch size. The initial capacity of the Toshiba World’s storage disk is 2 to 4 gigabytes.

The small storage disk will be used all kinds of mobile applications worldwide. Toshiba World’s storage disk will bring HDD functionality to the mobile phones, digital camcorders, and portable storage devices of the future. With HDD, these devices may become even more lightweight and powerful.

Toshiba has hopes that the new chip will be a spark to the world’s tech designers in innovating small, but powerful, digital products. Some possible applications for the new chip include wristwatch PDAs, wearable cell phones and digital cameras, and MP3 players that are contained entirely within the headset.

Toshiba planned to start sampling the world’s smallest HDD this summer and begin production in the fall of 2004.

Before introducing the .85-storage disk, Toshiba already made one of the world’s smallest hard disk drives. Their 1.8-inch HDD is used in some of the world’s most sought after mobile entertainment products including MP3 players, notebook computers and handheld GPS devices.
