Used Cell Phone – Donate It To Help Abuse Victims

After you upgraded to the latest and greatest in cell phone functionality, how do you decide what to do with your used cell phone? Whatever you do, don’t throw your used cell phone away. By 2003, there were more than 500 million used cell phones worldwide.

Tossing a cell phone into a landfill will only contribute to harming the environment because cell phones contain lead, arsenic, mercury and other potentially hazardous elements.

Sources estimate that there are 24 million cell phones sitting unused in American homes. Before you make it 24 million and one, consider the fact that your phone could be worth something to you or to someone else. Many companies buy used cellular phones. They will pay you a small amount of money to take your used phone off your hands. If you think your phone is worth more than they offer, sell it yourself through e-bay. Or, you could save your used cell phone and someday open an exhibit showing the history of cell phone technology.

Another great option is to donate your phone. Several charities collect discarded cell phones and will give you a tax deductible receipt. It’s a win-win situation; you donate your phone and they get a phone to give to some one in need or to refurbish and sell.

Call to Protect, a charitable organization, refurbishes donated phones and gives them to victims of domestic violence. Other used cell telephones collected by Call to Protect are resold. The profits go toward grants that support agencies working against domestic violence.
