Mobile Phone Numbers – Take Them With You!

mobile phone numbers can now move with you, thanks to new government standards. Whether you're changing to a new local service provider or even to a landline phone, your mobile phone number can go with you.

Portability for mobile phone numbers has been available for landlines since 1999 and in large cellular markets since November 2003.

Because numbers portability has increased competition among mobile service companies, this might be an optimal time for you to make a switch. But before you pack up your cellular telephone numbers and move to a new service provider, consider the following:

  • You can move your mobile number but can you break your contract? It will still cost you big bucks to leave your current mobile service provider before your contract expires.
  • You might be able to keep the number, but not the phone. Your new provider’s network may not support your current model.
  • Don’t cancel your current contract before you have selected a new provider and started the process of moving your phone number.
  • You may have to pay a surcharge to have your mobile phone number moved. Even if you don’t move your number, you will help pay for number portability as service providers pass the cost of the new system on to consumers. Expect additional fees to show up on your mobile phone bill.
  • You can only port your mobile phone number to a service provider that covers the same location.
  • Be sure to take a copy of your latest mobile phone bill with you when you move your number.
