They may not have won a gold medal, but during the 17-day festival in Athens, Samsung cellular phones were in the hands of Olympic officials. Wireless Olympics Work, gave 14,000 Samsung phones to Olympic officials and VIPs. VIPs used the phones to receive up-to-the-minute results and other data from WOW. Samsung cell phones were also on display in the popular Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung pavilion (nicknamed OR@S). The latest Samsung technology, including 57 cell phone models, was on display in the Spectator Center. While a few people may have noticed that official communications were taking place using Samsung cellulars, the company’s most visible presence at the games was the OR@S. As well, it’s estimated that at least 25,000 Olympic visitors had their picture taken with a Samsung camera phone at the Center and more than 800,000 visitors stopped by the OR@S during the Olympics. Samsung offered Olympic competitors the opportunity to make a free call home. According to Samsung, Olympic athletes and their family members made 7,500 cellular phone calls totaling 30,000 minutes of airtime. 75,000 e-mails were also sent from the OR@S. Samsung Electronics has been the Olympic partner for wireless communications since 1997. The company has offices in 46 countries. More notably, Samsung cell phones are second in sales in the worldwide cellular market.
