September 23, 2004 By: Jack Adams Cellular Phone Antenna – Boost Your SignalAn external cellular phone antenna dramatically enhances the performance of your cellular phone because it is uniquely designed to boost the signal strength of a mobile phone. That said, however, depending upon where you are standing, or driving, a cellular phone antenna may be no help at all. The true primary factor in signal strength can be defined in three words, location, location, location. When you're buying a cell phone, remember that the type of cell antenna you’ll need will mainly depend on how far you are from the cell tower and what stands between your phone and that tower. Cellular antennas work by focusing the energy of the existing radio signal. The 0db gain antenna is designed for mountains or urban centers with lots of tall building and radiates energy vertically. In flat, open terrain, higher gain (5db to 9db) antennas that radiate energy horizontally work the best. The 3db gain antenna is a nice compromise for general settings. External cell phone antennas are able to add additional signal gain by avoiding obstacles, such as your head or the body of your car, that hamper the performance of internal models. Any kind of an obstacle will absorb a lot of signal strength from your cell phone’s internal antenna. Quite a few of today's cell phones have an external antenna port, while some models require that you remove the internal antenna and insert an adapter. Go online to discover a wide range of cellular antennas, available for home, office and mobile use. Mount an external antenna directly onto your car, RV or even your boat. Keep in mind that you need to choose an antenna that not only fits your phone type, but is also compatible with the network you are using. Dual-band antennas that work on more than one type of network are available. Contact your cell phone service provider for more information on the type of network coverage your phone has.
