Motorola Cellular Phones – New Phone Supports Wi-Fi

Motorola Cellular Phones has announced that it has developed a new phone that can switch seamlessly between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Announced in July 2004, shortly after the FCC approved the device, it is one of the first to support both Wi-Fi and cellular technologies.

The Motorola CN620 phone is compatible with three types of Wi-Fi and GSM cellular standards. That simply means that these Motorola cellular phones can transfer seamlessly between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, even in the middle of a phone call. The phone automatically selects the least expensive type of network available.

In a statement announcing development of the latest Motorola cell phones, company chairman and CEO Ed Zander said, "We believe this technology will change the notion of work. Work will no longer be defined as where you are, but as what you do and how you do it. One device, one phone number, one voice mail—and the key functionality of your office desktop on a single mobile device."

Motorola needs to find a partner wireless carrier before the innovative Motorola cell phones can be made available to the market. The move toward convergence between Wi-Fi and cellular could be slowed by the high cost of developing the infrastructure to support the process. Some wireless carriers are beginning to offer limited Wi-Fi service. To date, however, no one has stepped forward to provide the corporate roaming services needed to support the phones.

The CN620 phone was developed by Motorola’s iDEN group.
