April 12, 2005 By: Jack Adams International Cell Phone – Great For Business TravelUS business travellers used to buy a separate international cell phone or rent a cell phone when travelling overseas, but now companies are starting to introduce an international cell phone that is compatible with the rest of the world. Countries like Europe, Africa, Australia and most of Asia use GMS, or Global System of Mobile Communications, as the standard cell phone technology. While GSM phones are sold in the United States, the technology is not always compatible internationally. Most GSM phones available in the U.S. are 1900 MHz and international cell phones need to be 900MHz or 1800MH. Companies like Motorola, Ericcson, Panasonic, and Nokia are now introducing new GSM models in order to meet the growing demand for truly international cell phones. When buying a phone, be sure to specify that you want an international cell phone that can be used in both the United States and abroad. After unlocking your international phone you will be able to use a SIM card, or Subscriber Identification Module. A SIM card plugs into a GSM cell phone and contains all of the information needed to access a local service provider. The SIM, therefore, prevents the need for a cell phone user to enter into a contract with service providers in every country.
