September 22, 2004 By: Jack Adams Wireless Purchase – Why Do You Buy?The question for today is, what are the forces that drive consumers to make a wireless purchase? Are they mainly influenced by family and friends or by commercials featuring actors like Catherine Zeta-Jones? Will those “can you hear me now?” ads compel you to make a wireless purchase? Judging from the number of ads on television and radio, companies are betting that our wireless purchases have a lot to do with what we see and hear. Wireless companies spend millions of dollars each year sponsoring major television events like the Olympics and the Academy Awards. Many consumers will remember the ad but they don’t make the connection to any particular wireless company. They can tell you they saw in a commercial but they have no idea what specific wireless purchase the ad wanted them to make. Many wireless companies use direct mail. Direct mail usually offers some extra incentive like free phones or rebates to encourage wireless purchases. Still, it’s unlikely that people who open their mail are suddenly compelled to buy a new wireless phone or service plan. However, cellular phone offers are becoming almost as prolific as credit card offers. Wireless companies also spend millions on dollars on market research and advertising, but the most powerful influence on wireless purchases may still be a recommendation by a friend. Someone at work shows you their cool new phone and you want one. Jane loves her wireless service plan that lets her family share minutes. You decide to get one, too. Perhaps your friend Jack has a phone plan that offers great coverage so you switch to his wireless provider. Whatever compels you to purchase a wireless phone, make sure you do some homework so you can make the best wireless phone purchase available.
