September 22, 2004 By: Jack Adams Cellular Market – Growth Beyond BeliefOver the past 20 years the cellular market has experienced tremendous growth in the United States and it doesn't look like that trend is going to change any time soon. The cellular market is expected to continue to grow in the US and worldwide. While the cellular markets began to expand in the eary 1980's, by 1984, statistics showed that 7,000 cell phones were sold in the US alone. By 1989, that number of annual cellular phone sales had grown to one million! Along with the sale of cell phones, cellular phone service subscriptions took off from 340,000 to 3 million by the end of the decade. In the United States today, with cell markets that include some 180 million cell phone owners and 86.1 million service plans subscribers the question some people are asking is, have the cell markets reached a saturation point? Experts in the cell market arena tell us that the answer to that question is "no". While the inital growth of cellular markets was fueled by consumers buying their first cell phones, today, the majority of people are repeat customers. It is believed that the most cellular phone users exchange or buy a new cell phone every 18 months and whether or not that's true, if just 51 percent of the current cellular markets follow that trend, that adds up to 92 million wireless phones. Changes in technology will continue to enhance cellular market growth. As the market adjusts and responds to new innovations and technology, the cellular market will surely continue to grow. Cell phone consumers will also be inclined to upgrade their phones as GSM phones also become more widely available in the United States. Judging by the number of new phones being introduced into the cell market, manufacturers are quite certain that the US cellular markets will remain robust.
