Hands Free Safety – Keeping Everyone Safe On The Road

While new hands-free technology makes it somewhat safer to drive and talk on a cell phone, hands free safety is an area that still needs more study. There are plenty of things that you can do to promote hands free safety.

In an extensive report, provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), that addressed hands-free safety on cell phones while driving, the report suggested that drivers should not assume that using hands-free equipment will solve the safety issues. Although holding, dialing or reaching a cell phone while driving can present a danger, collected data indicates that it may be the conversation itself that might be a bigger safety issue.

Since only limited data has been collected in few states on the relationship between hands-free phone use and traffic safety, the NHTSA suggests that more studies should be done.

Drivers can help to minimize the risks of accidents by following these hands-free safety tips when using a cell phone while driving:

  • Always remember that your first job is driving. Anything that takes your mind off the road can be unsafe.
  • Use hands-free equipment with voice activation.
  • Be proactive. The person on the other end of phone can’t see what’s going on around you. It’s up to you to say things like, “Hold on a second. Traffic is really heavy right now.”
  • Try not to have emotionally charged conversations while driving. Save the spat with the spouse for later.
  • Try not to look at the phone. People often turn their eyes toward the phone when they are talking.
