September 17, 2004 By: Jack Adams GSM Cell Phone – Worldwide CompatabilityInternationally, GSM cell phones are the standard in wireless communication. Even though the GSM cell phone is the world's most popular choice and was chosen in the 1980’s as the wireless technology for the European continent, GSM, which stands for Global System of Mobile Communications, is still not the standard in the USA. GSM cell phone customers travelling in Europe, Africa, Australia and most of Asia can use the same phone while travelling as they do in their own country. A subscriber information module, or SIM card, is plugged into GSM phones and contain all of the information needed to access a local service provider. SIM cards may be purchased through a company called Telestial before you travel, or you can buy them when you arrive in a foreign country. While GSM phones are sold in the United States, the technology is not compatible worldwide. Most GSM phones available in the U.S. are 1900 MHz, but more companies are starting to offer the internationally compatible phones which are 900MHz or 1800MHz cell phones. If you travel overseas a lot then you may want to purchase an internationally compatible GSM phone. Other advantages of the GSM phone include clear, crisp sound quality as well as a level of safety and security not available from analog models. The digital technology and superior batteries in GSM phones make it possible to talk more and charge less. Last, but not least, GSM handset are relative inexpensive, some advertised as low as $99.
