Mobile Phone – How Far Can You Throw Yours?

Nokia, the world’s leading manufacturer of the mobile phone is based in Finland. Maybe that explains why the country is also home to the Mobile Phone Throwing Championship.

That’s right. There’s actually a contest to see how far you can throw a mobile cell phone. Playing games on mobile phones is a favorite pastime of millions, but playing games with the phones themselves is a new twist.

In Finland, spectators cheer and blow plastic whistles as contestants launch their cell phones into the sky. More than 200 people from five countries took part in the fifth annual mobile cellular phone fling held at the end of August.

Champion Ville Piipo of Helsinki can hurl a Nokia cell phone handset 270 feet. His championship toss set a new world record for mobile cell phone throwing. Champions were also crowned in team and junior divisions. Toni Kuusela won the coveted junior championship with a telephone toss just two feet shy of Piipo’s mark.

Perhaps manufacturers should start considering how aerodynamic their portable telephone designs are, since contestants choose which model of mobile cellular phone they want to throw. We can only guess where the contestants get their motivation for propelling phones into space.

At the Olympics, where cellphone throwing is not an official sport, at least five million additional cellphone users made calls outside their home territory during the Olympics. Just think of all those roaming charges.
