Cellular Services Movie – Calling 911

On Sept. 10, 2004, New Line Cinema will be releasing their new movie called “Cellular,” a cellular services movie starring Kim Bassinger and a Nokia 6600 cell phone. Cell phones have reached a whole new level as a cultural icon since having a cellular services movie made in their honor.

Movie director, David Ellis describes the cell service movie as, “Speed with a cell phone.” What the movie is really all about is the tensions and frustrations cell phone users face with cellular service and cell phone service providers.

When Kim Bassinger, who plays a kidnapped woman who fears that she and her family are about to be killed, makes a cell phone call she reaches a random number. The cell phone number she has reached belongs to a young medical student played by Chris Evans. In order to reach Bassinger on time, Evans must negotiate the usual perils of action flicks, plus the added perils of cell phone service.

The main problems facing Chris in his hunt for Bassinger are that his cell phone battery is dying, his cellular phone service keeps cutting in and out, the static is annoying and potentially deadly (for Bassinger) and he has an unproductive encounter with customer service. Murphy's law works overtime in this movie as anything bad that can happen, does.

No specific cell service provider is named in the movie, however cell phone maker, Nokia, agreed to have its 6600 phone in a starring role and is also helping to promote the movie.

We don't want to spoil the ending of the movie for you, but we will say that in the end Evans isn't likely to leave home again until he changes his cellular phone service, and purchases a mobile battery charger and hands-free headset.
