September 17, 2004 By: Jack Adams Cellular Telephones – Keep In TouchIt's a sign of the times. Cellular telephones are replacing the family dinner. It used to be that the dinner table was a place where families would gather at the end of the day to talk, but with such busy lives today, parents and kids regularly use their cell phones to stay in touch. Many of the conversations that used to occur at the dinner table, now take place via cellular telephones. When Dad leaves for work before the kids leave for school, he can call them on their cell phones to say "good morning". After school, if Mom isn't home to greet the kids, she relies on her cellular phone to have instant communication and ensure that they got home safely. With cell phone plans that allow families to share minutes and to call other family members free, every member of the family can carry their own cellular phone. One parent described her kids’ cell phones as “umbilical cords” that keep the family connected. Even grandparents, who used to resist new technology, are finding cellular phones an easy way to be involved with their grandkids. Grandpa can call Junior’s phone directly to find out how the baseball game went. Even if Junior doesn’t answer, Grandpa can still leave a personal or instant message. With camera phones, Junior can even send Grandpa an instant picture of his game-winning hit. In today’s busy world, cell phones can help keep family members connected.
